Back of the heel pain (Bone, Tendon & Bursa)

Hello everyone this is Paul Moore 3 Val pal today I want to talk about a common question that I get about pain on the back of the heel, so what we are going to do is we’re just gonna talk about 3 sources of pain that you can commonly get on the back of the heel and I’m gonna show you where those are what causes that irritation and how we can prevent that from getting worse.
all right so I have this young lady here who has graciously volunteered to lead us take a look and draw or heal so we’re gonna start from the bone and work our way out through the skin okay so the heel bone sits right here and on the back side there’s a little bit of an anchor okay rate in this area right here on the backside. And this is where the Achilles tendon attach is okay so that’s a what we call a ritual calcaneal spur and sometimes this bone this burger or attachment can get larger and larger and larger okay just like pulling on the skin when you pull on the skin it can kind of pull out like that will win that Achilles pulls on this bone it can do form like this and become a hard bony ridge or a spur that can cause a lot of pain because it’s just going to stick out and rub on a shoe every time you take a step or every time you put your foot down into a boot to cause a mutation there that’s called the headlines deformity and we see this quite often with people not a lot you can do about that spur and till it gets so bad you have to have it surgically fixed but we’ll talk about some of the things you can do to help avoid it next. You have the Achilles tendon so your calf muscle comes down here and it turns into the Achilles tendon. Which basically attach is.
To that region, we just talked about. In that Achilles tendon has some fibers it’s played down here also. In that tendon can become inflamed and irritated especially if you’re doing a lot of repetitive activity sometimes you can receive a trauma to that area or your shoes too tight causing irritation we see this a lot with people who have flat feet or when the heel goes back and forth you can get all inflamed irritated and swollen and because a lot of pain on the back of the heel so I Kelly’s tendonitis or Achilles tendinopathy can be another source of pain back there and then between V.. Tendon in this skin just below the skin is a subcutaneous bursa so what is that bursa bursa is a little fluid filled sac that sits right over here helps to lubricate that tendon help to protect it from too much trauma in that bursa can be a pain generator their nerves in that process and it can fill up and get swollen and irritated and because you’re Tatian the number one cause of bursitis on the back of the heel is a boot or shoe that is rubbing their too much or when people just push off their shoe with their other foot and they don’t and lace our shoes or anti them that because a lot of your Tatian back here something else you need to take into consideration when purchasing issue is how hard the back is if you were a boot where maybe a leather boot or a work boot sometimes that material on the inside can be really really hard and because some year Tatian back there sometimes that can be punched out to be a little bit softer back here at the help take some pressure off of that now it’s important that in order to decrease year Tatian and inflammation you try to avoid those activities that cause a lot of repetitive motion back and forth and because a lot of your Tatian the back of the shoe so I might recommend a sneaker like a Nike Herat she or the a versa form shift bisa Coney.
Has a nice counter in the back here that is really really soft and can take some pressure off of that sometimes going into a clog or a backless shoe can help decrease that year Tatian or inflammation now some people like the ice that area and it’s quite effective to decrease pain but if this does not get better in a reasonable amount of time just by taking pressure off of it and decreasing activities that cause a lot of your Tatian you really need to seek some medical attention for this just to make sure that you don’t have a tear of the tendon or some sort of a stress fracture problem like that on the back of the heel that we’ll see this type of issue in in 121314 year olds who are very very active they could have Sievers which can cause pain in the back of the heel but if you’re an adult and have been back here does the 3 most common sources of discomfort so I hope you like today’s video and I hope that help to clarify why some people have pain in the back of the heel please like our videos and to give us a thumbs up make sure that you subscribe to our channel so that you can get more videos when they come out thanks.
